It splits two ways and the split is the whole character of the meeting: $280,000 went to athletes in their own name and $340,000 went to federations, because each senior race pays a team standing worth exactly as much as its individual ladder.

$30,000 to the winner of a senior race. The individual ladder runs $30,000, $15,000, $10,000, $7,000, $5,000 and $3,000 for first down to 6th, which is $70,000 a race. A winner whose country also wins the team standing does not collect that as well: the $20,000 team cheque is the federation's.

The federation, as one payment. A team ladder pays $20,000, $16,000, $12,000, $10,000, $8,000 and $4,000 down to 6th, $70,000 a race, and it is handed to the country rather than divided among the four runners who scored it. A country may enter six runners in a senior race and the finishing places of its first four home are added together, lowest total winning. Kenya scored 10 in the senior women's race in 2024, which is the lowest score that exists, because its runners finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th and nothing beats 1, 2, 3 and 4. The two runners a country enters beyond its scorers still race, and they still push rival scorers backwards, so a sixth entry who finishes nowhere can be worth a place to the team anyway.

No. Two of the five races on the programme pay nothing at all, and they are the under-20 men's and under-20 women's races. Marta Alemayo won the U20 women's race at both championships and was paid nothing either time, while sixth place in the senior race the same afternoon was worth $3,000. 315 athletes have started an under-20 race across the two editions for no prize money of any kind.

A team is four runners, two men and two women, alternating, so it is the one race here where a country cannot be paid without entering both sexes. It is also the shortest way to a cheque on the programme: $12,000 for the 22:23 Australia ran in Tallahassee, shared between four people who each ran a quarter of it.

Jacob Kiplimo, on $60,000 from two paid runs and two titles. Only 21 athletes have been paid in their own name at these two championships, out of 768 starts, because the individual ladder stops at 6th in a field of 123 starters. Agnes Jebet Ngetich is next on $37,000.

Kenya, on $217,000 of the $620,000 handed over, 35.0% of it. $88,000 of that is the federation's from six paid team places and $129,000 belongs to nine of its runners. Ethiopia is next on $144,000 and Uganda third on $138,000; 13 countries were paid anything at all, out of 65 that entered.

Six places in each senior race, six teams in each team standing and four teams in the mixed relay. 6th in a senior race is worth $3,000 and 7th is worth nothing in a race that 114 runners finished. The World Relays do the opposite and pay every team in the final, all the way down to $2,000 for 8th. A cross country field is far too deep for a ladder to reach, so the cut is made early instead.

Belgrade 2024 and Tallahassee 2026 were paid on the same card to the dollar, the same six individual places, the same six team places and the same four relay places, so $620,000 was put up and $620,000 was paid out.
