What the rainbow jersey pays
The elite road race world champion is paid €8,000, and the elite women's road race champion is paid €8,000. It is the one place on the whole UCI scale where the two calendars pay the same number at elite level. On the WorldTour the same win is €20,000 against €1,690.
A world title pays three riders and stops, where every WorldTour ladder pays twenty. The whole championship, all eleven titles on the 2026 scale, is €110,250 of prize money, which is 2.2 times what a single men's race group 1 classic is obliged to put up and spread across 33 podium places rather than twenty riders.

The ladder halves at every step and does it in all eleven rows: second is exactly half of first, third exactly half of second. The mixed relay is the only title paid to a team rather than a rider, and at €15,000 it is the largest single prize at the championships. How six riders split it is not part of the scale.

Both charts are drawn against the same €8,000, so a bar on one is the same length as a bar of the same value on the other. The four elite bars run the full width on both sides, which is the equal pay. Below them the U23 ladder halves the elite figure and the junior ladder halves it again, and the women's chart is two rows shorter than the men's because the 2026 scale carries a U23 ladder on one calendar and not the other. The mixed relay is in neither chart: at €15,000 it belongs to both calendars at once, and it is the first row of the table above.

Every other figure the two calendars share is a figure they share by being small: the junior ladders match because both are near the floor of the scale. The elite World Championship titles are the one place the scale puts a men's win and a women's win at the top of their sport and pays them the same number. Set against the races those riders came from, the gap is 11.8 times.

The world title is 40% of what Milan-San Remo is obliged to pay its winner, and five races on the men's calendar pay €20,000. It is still the win every rider on the start line wants, because the jersey is worn for a year and the classic is over on the Sunday. None of that is prize money, and the scale does not pretend otherwise.
