Where racing prize money goes in Great Britain
British racing splits every pound of prize money five ways, and the two codes do not split it the same way. Across the 122 Great Britain races on this site, worth £19.4m between them, owners take £15.3m and the riders take £1.3m.
the British Horseracing Authority sets the shares and they add up to exactly 100% of the fund, so a purse is spoken for before the race is run.

Owner. The owner is the only party in racing who is paid the prize rather than a percentage of it, which is why their share is the one that moves when a country changes its rules.
Trainer. The trainer takes a percentage of everything the yard wins, on top of the training fees the owner pays whether the horse wins or not.
Jockey. The riders, across the whole field rather than the winner alone. A rider is also paid a fee for every ride, won or lost, which sits outside the prize fund entirely.
Stable staff. Stable staff are paid from a share set aside before the owner is paid, so a yard with a good season earns from it directly rather than through a bonus the trainer chooses to give.
Industry causes. Racing welfare, retraining of racehorses and the levies the sport charges itself, taken off the top of every race in the country.
