HORSE RACING · 131 RACES
Where racing prize money goes in France
French racing splits a purse four ways and publishes the place ladder as well, which almost no other country does. Across the 131 France races on this site, worth €30.2m between them, owners take €22.6m and the riders take €2.6m.
France Galop sets the shares and they add up to exactly 100% of the fund, so a purse is spoken for before the race is run.

Owner. The owner is the only party in racing who is paid the prize rather than a percentage of it, which is why their share is the one that moves when a country changes its rules.
Trainer. French trainers take almost twice the share their British counterparts do, which is the single biggest difference between the two systems.
Jockey. The riders, across the whole field. French racing pays its riders a larger share of the fund than British Flat racing does.
Social charges. France collects the sport’s social contributions inside the split rather than billing them afterwards, so the figure is visible in a way it is not elsewhere.

How far down the field the money goes
70 races that pay the published ladder
France Galop publishes the ladder as well as the split: 50% to the winner, 20% to the second, 15% to the third, 10% to the fourth, 5% to the fifth. On 70 of the 131 France races here, the winner's cheque we hold is exactly 50% of the purse, so the other four places on those races are the same published rule rather than a guess. The ladder is shown only on those 70.

Frequently asked questions
How much of a France purse does the owner get?
75% of it, set by France Galop. Across the 131 France races here that is €22,644,750 of €30,193,000.
How much does a jockey get from a France race?
8.5% of the purse, across the whole field rather than the winner alone. Across these 131 races that is €2,566,405.
What does a trainer take from prize money in France?
14% of the purse, on top of the training fees the owner pays whether the horse wins or not. Across these 131 races that is €4,227,020.
Does the whole purse get paid out?
Yes. France Galop sets shares that add up to exactly 100% of the fund, so every pound of a France purse is accounted for before the race is run. Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe puts up €5,000,000, of which €3,750,000 reaches owners and €425,000 reaches riders.
How is a France purse divided between the places?
50% to the winner, 20% to the second, 15% to the third, 10% to the fourth, 5% to the fifth. That ladder holds on 70 of the 131 races here, where the winner's cheque we hold is exactly half the purse.
