French-bred premiums in horse racing
France is the one country here where the purse is not the end of the money. A horse born and raised in France earns its owner a premium on top of whatever it wins, and on the 103 races where a single rate covers the whole field that premium comes to €8.5m of extra money alongside €25.9m of prize money.
The rate follows the horse, not the race. It is 75% for a two or three-year-old, 45% once the horse turns four, and 20% in a Group 1 at any age, which means the richest races on the French calendar pay the smallest premium of all.

Two and three-year-olds, 75%. The top rate, and the one that reveals what the premium is for. A French-bred three-year-old is worth three quarters again of whatever it wins, which is a subsidy on the decision to breed and keep a horse in France rather than a reward for winning a big race.
Four-year-olds and up, 45%. The rate falls by 30 points the year a horse turns four, so the same horse winning the same race a year later brings its owner substantially less on top. The premium is aimed at the years when a horse is still being proved rather than at a long career.
Group 1, 20%. The smallest rate sits on the biggest races, for horses of every age. A Group 1 already pays enough to justify keeping a horse in training, so the premium does the least work there and France Galop spends it further down the programme instead.
Over jumps, 15%. Paid in a Premium meeting and not in a Group 1, to three-year-old fillies from 1 September and to mares of four and five from 1 January. All 4 French jump races on this site are Group 1 races, so the premium reaches none of them: Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, Prix La Haye Jousselin, Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil, Prix Ferdinand Dufaure.
A premium is paid on top of the purse rather than out of it, and in full: nothing is held back. It does carry the same deductions for the trainer and the rider that prize money carries, so a premium lifts four people rather than one.

Why a Group 1 pays the smallest premium of all

Prix Guillaume d'Ornano is a Group 2 at Deauville Racecourse worth €400,000. Prix du Jockey Club is a Group 1 worth €1,500,000, which is 3.8 times as much. A French-bred winner of the first takes €171,000 of premium and a French-bred winner of the second takes €171,420, a difference of €420 between them.

What is a French-bred premium?
Money France Galop pays the owner of a horse born and raised in France, over and above the prize the race pays. It is a percentage of whatever the horse wins, added on top: 75% for a two or three-year-old, 45% for a horse of four and over, and 20% in a Group 1 whatever the horse's age. It is paid on the allocation to the first five home, not on the winner's cheque alone.
How much is the premium on the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe?
The Arc is a Group 1, so the rate is 20%. On a first prize of €2,857,000 that is €571,400 to the owner of a French-bred winner, on top of the prize itself. Across the whole €5,000,000 purse the race carries €1,000,000 of premium.
Why does a Group 1 pay a smaller premium than a Group 3?
Because the premium is a breeding subsidy rather than a bonus. A Group 1 already pays enough to justify keeping a horse in France, so the money does more work further down the programme. Prix Guillaume d'Ornano is a Group 2 worth €400,000 and pays its winner €171,000 of premium; Prix du Jockey Club is a Group 1 worth €1,500,000 and pays €171,420.
Do French premiums apply to jumps races?
Only narrowly. Over jumps the premium is 15% and goes to fillies and mares of three, four and five, in a Premium meeting, and not in a Group 1. All 4 French jump races on this site are Group 1, so none of them carries it.
Does the breeder get paid as well?
Yes, and separately. The breeder of a French-bred thoroughbred takes 13% where the covering took place in France and 8.5% where it did not, charged on the prize and the owner's premium together rather than on the prize alone. On the Arc that is €445,692 to the breeder of the winner.
Is the premium taken out of the prize money?
A premium is paid on top of the purse rather than out of it, and in full: nothing is held back. It does carry the same deductions for the trainer and the rider that prize money carries, so a premium lifts four people rather than one.
