The pattern is the same in every one of them: about a quarter of the fund to the winner, a shallow slope down the placings, and a last paid place worth around a hundredth of the pot. The two ladders the sport uses are set out here, and what a class actually pays takes the whole corpus apart the same way.

Frequently asked questions

How much prize money did Horse of the Year Show pay in 2024?

£188,650 across 25 classes and 234 paid placings.

What was the biggest class at Horse of the Year Show 2024?

The International Showjumping - Leading Showjumper of the Year - Grand Prix, a fund of £47,333 (€56,800) split down 12 placings.

Who won the most at Horse of the Year Show 2024?

Julien Anquetin, £23,770 across 5 paid rounds and 2 wins.

How is a show jumping class split?

Down a fixed ladder. Roughly a quarter of the starters are paid, the winner takes about a quarter of the fund and the last paid place takes about one per cent of it, so a class is a shallow pyramid rather than a winner-takes-all prize.

What did a placing pay at Horse of the Year Show 2024?

The median cheque was £227 across 234 paid placings.

Who receives the money?

The owner of the horse. A money prize in equestrian sport is awarded to the owner or lessee rather than to the athlete, which is why every result table here carries an owner of record beside the rider.
