Nine Masters 1000s put £84.4m up between them, 33% of the £255.9m the four majors carry. All nine of them together are worth barely more than the US Open is on its own.
Two ways tennis pays
A major and a Masters 1000 pay a player once, for the round they went out in. Reach the last eight at Wimbledon and you are paid the quarter-final figure, not that plus every round underneath it.
The season-ending finals are the opposite, and the only events in the sport that work this way. Eight players, a fee for completing the group stage, then a figure added on for every match won. Five wins is a sum rather than a cheque, and it comes to £3,877,778 at the WTA Finals, more than Wimbledon pays its champion and more than two others.
The Davis Cup Finals is a third thing again. The eight nations that reach it are paid a band each, and the money goes to the federation rather than to the player: how it reaches a squad is each federation's own arrangement.

It splits 9-0 one way and 4-0 the other, and the reason is the draw. A major puts 128 players in and pays all 64 who lose their opening match, so the first round costs more than the champion does at every one of them. A Masters seeds its leading players straight into round two, so a 96 draw sends only 32 out first and a 56 draw only 24, and the champion out-earns the lot. Same sport, same season, and the money points in opposite directions.
