How much of a tennis career the majors pay for

The four grand slams have paid $1,559,753,109 of the $4,482,600,062 won since 1985, which is 34.8% of every dollar on the tour. For a career centred on the 1980s it was 19.4%.

Every player here carries three tables: the whole career, the majors on their own, and the rest of the tour. They reconcile exactly, so dividing one by the other gives a figure about a career that no ranking of prize money can show. A high share is a player who turns up for four fortnights a year.

The slam share of every dollar, season by season

What part of the year's prize money the four majors paid

1985 to 2026

The line climbs because the majors have grown their funds faster than the tour has grown its own, and it jumps in 2020 because there was barely a tour that year: two of the four majors were played and most of the calendar was not, so almost everything anybody won came from a slam.

The careers the majors paid for

Ranked by the share of a career that came from the four slams

466 careers

Ranked among the careers with at least $2,000,000 in seasons that carry a split. 217 careers sit under that and are left out: below it a single qualifying run at a major against a quiet season reads as though the slams paid for everything, which is arithmetic rather than a fact about the player.

The twenty careers the slams paid for most

Share of prize money from the four majors

Tour average 34.8%

A career at the top of this chart is one where the qualifying rounds of a major were worth more than a good week anywhere else, which is the honest shape of the modern tour below the top fifty: Arthur Fery took 84.1% of $2,070,812 from four fortnights a year.

The twenty careers built away from the slams

Share of prize money from the four majors, lowest first

Tour average 34.8%

Almost everybody at this end of the chart was playing in the 1980s and 1990s, when a major paid a champion less than a good run of tour events did and the calendar was where a career was made. Brad Gilbert is the extreme: 7.6% of $5,154,042.

Does a bigger career lean on the majors more?

Under $1m 74 $14,809,577 $45,804,252 32.3%

The answer is no, except right at the top. Every band from under a million to twenty million sits within a few points of the tour as a whole; only the over $50m group pulls away, at 41.9%.

The slam share by era

Careers grouped on their midpoint

5 decades

Two generations apart, the same sport paid its players in completely different places. That is the argument for reading any all-time money list beside this chart rather than on its own, and it is why the all-time list carries the share in a column of its own.

Frequently asked questions

What share of tennis prize money comes from the grand slams?

34.8% of it, across every season the split reaches. The four majors have paid $1,559,753,109 of the $4,482,600,062 won in those seasons by the 689 players on this site.

Has the grand slam share of a tennis career grown?

Sharply. It was 19.4% for careers centred on the 1980s and 37.8% for careers centred on the 2020s. Year by year it runs 16.5% in 1985 against 39.0% in 2025.

Which player owes most of his prize money to the majors?

Arthur Fery, 84.1% of a $2,070,812 career, among the 466 players ranked here.

Which player owes least of his prize money to the majors?

Brad Gilbert, 7.6%. A low share is a career built on the week-to-week tour rather than on four fortnights a year, and it is what almost every career looked like before the majors pulled away.

Do the biggest careers rely on the majors more?

Only at the very top. Careers over $50m draw 41.9% of their money from the majors, against 35.3% in the $2m to $5m band. Across the rest of the tour the share barely moves.

Why does this page start in 1985?

That is the first season the majors are separated from the rest of the tour in what we hold. Before it the money is on the player pages and in the all-time list; what we do not hold is which part of it came from the four majors, so those seasons are left out of every figure here rather than counted as nothing.
